2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Full Test
CHECK OUT THE NEW DIESEL JETTA: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=132146?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..3.* For those alternative-fuel-conscious, carbon-conscientious driving enthusiasts among us, the big news from Volkswagen is electric, mainly because it has introduced a car that isn't. The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel (yep, that's its official name) is the first diesel-powered new car to be certified for sale across the entire US — including ...

They are both great cars and its nice to see companies offering alternative vehicles. I tested both and the Jetta is simply a smoother, quieter, more refined car, and more of a pleasure to drive. Diesel here in CA is priced the same as mid-octane 89, so I believe ripper is fact challenged or blinded by brand loyalty. I bought the TDI because my 76 mile round trip commute is 95 percent hwy, and their hwy mileage is comparable. Enjoy your Prius, son, but they're not for everyone.

I am guessing Mr. Ripper is a Pious, I mean Prius, owner.

In the U.S. right now 87 gas cost $1.89 per gallon and Diesel is $2.84 per gallon. So go right ahead and buy a diesel car. I could care less because its your money not mine…

Its not just the U.S. its the world! You may not realize this but oil will reach its peak in about a year or two. If you don't know what that means for the world then go look the 1970's when the U.S. hit its peak in oil production.

The Prius and the Jetta have the same slalom speed of 64mph and the same 1/4 time of 16 sec.

Plus, diesel's cheaper than gasoline here in Canada. The way it should be considering it's much cheaper to refine. The U.S. is just too addicted to gasoline.

No lie on the fuel mileage. Nothing but straight lines and empty highway up here. If you would look at the other video (Jetta TDI vs Prius) you'd find out that the Prius handles like a tank and couldn't corner its way around Daytona.

Jetta doesn't even have nearly the features of the Prius and the Prius gos just as fast as and handles just as good as the Jetta. Even though I know you are lying about your mpg it doesn't matter since you have to spend a dollar more per gallon to get it. As for laughing well… If that were true then you the Jetta would out sell the Prius, which it doesn't.The only thing a Jetta is better at is its looks which isn't say much. My wife pays just under $17 to go 500+ miles!

everything is classy but just the STEERING DESIGN can be improved like the new passat cc & golf………..

The numbers are fudged. I get a consistant 55+ MPG mixed driving and a steady 62 MPG on the highway. Prius is a laughing stock on an automobile, at least you get a little respect with 263 ft lbs.

WOW 31mpg… and add the fact that diesel fuel cost $1 more per gallon then 87 gas… lol Lets do the math! 30 gallons will get 930 miles and cost you $90. While the Prius with 30 gallon gets me 1,600 miles at a cost of $57 and the Prius gos just as fast has Smart Keys, Bluetooth, VSA, Nav, a 500 watt DSP sound system, 8 airbags and the quietest ride a car has ever had. The Prius has way more features then that Jetta even offers. The Jetta's best mpg of 43 is the Prius's worst. Its all in the #s

I don't think so. It's TOO MANY people out there that, loves GM too much for them to go bankrupt! Same for Ford and, Mopar.

Well, I guess GM is technically bankrupt if they have to borrow billions to stay alive for 3 months, pathetic.

Gm will go bankrupt, whether it's chapter 11 or chapter 7 is up in the air.

Regardless, It went into production and was available to the public. But this still has nothing to do with what I was discussing, so I have no idea why your digging into it so much.
My point was that a Hybrid will never deliver the performance/quality drive of a diesel powered car. They have diesels in Europe making 70+mpg. No matter how you drive them.
Hybrids aren't the answer to saving money on fuel, More efficient engines and alternate fuels are.

The Tesla Roadster was just a publicity stunt! That car wasn't even suppose to make it to production. That way, it was pulled from society. As far as Hybrids…, not all of them are bad. It's a great investment if, you live in a big city. I guess, it all depends on, how it's built. From what I hear…, Ford's new hybrid system in the new Fusion is considered one of the best hybrids ever built!

What does that have to do with anything I said? I didn't say Ford was destined to go out sooner than any other make, and I wasn't comparing only American Hybrids or Ford specifically, Im dissing Hybrids a Whole.
Also, I didn't even mention anything about Electrically powered cars, So I don't know why you brought that up, I was talking about Hybrids.
First electric car? Ever heard of the Tesla Roadster? Went into production in 2008. So actually, Fords not the first.

Lol.. Oh yeah? Out of Detroit's "Big3"…, Ford's doing the best! Also…, Ford is planning on releasing the world's first electrical vehicle to the market soon(before any Germ. or, Jap. manufactor)! Betcha' didn't know about that?!

It was a joke, although I wouldn't say it would "never" happen. I doubt they are in any danger of going out of business immediately.
I still however stand by the Jetta being the better car. Hybrids are notorious for poor performance and build quality, You just get jacked up prices because of the claimed MPG's. Plus the MPG's promised aren't always delivered, No matter how you drive a TDI you get relatively the same fuel economy.

Is that what you think? Believe me…, no American made auto will never go out of business! America created the first automobile(s)in the world(GM, Ford and, Mopar)!

4 valves a cylinder would be a 16v… lol.
Unless your thinking he meant 1v a cylinder, which is impossible.

And also doesn't drive nearly as nice or provide as much torque/hp. Plus, at the rate most American makes are going, Ford wont even be around much longer =P

in addition to that, just look at what that (small) engine does and how the car performs, considering that it weighs more than the ford explorer!
