2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Full Test
CHECK OUT THE NEW DIESEL JETTA: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=132146?tid=edmunds.il.home.photopanel..3.* For those alternative-fuel-conscious, carbon-conscientious driving enthusiasts among us, the big news from Volkswagen is electric, mainly because it has introduced a car that isn't. The 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel (yep, that's its official name) is the first diesel-powered new car to be certified for sale across the entire US — including ...

Maybe it will put a smile on your face. Particularly if you sit on the stick shift, but other people might smile while they happily drive around in an automatic.

Your simplistic but empty response says a lot about your knowledge on the prius engineering. If hybrid was simple, american cars would have jumped into that long time ago. It actually required a large investment, risk and balls. O-60 is irrelevant and measures absolutely nothing. It is just a teaser for drivers that dream about something they will rarely if ever use. What "features" the Prius has that make it a superior car. I don't know because you don't say. Substantiate your statements.

its funny how you dislike the Prius but bought one for your wife

why not just buy a VW GLI? its roughtly the same cost, still does great on gas, and it is actually fun.

I don't like small cars, but she does. I don't dislike ether car, for me to buy one for myself would be a major step down for me. You must always buy what YOU want, not what everyone else likes. I could really careless what you or anybody else buys. Its your money…

so… whats your point!

Boy… you substantiate that shit! You don't know how to google? 0-60, 1/4 & slaloms times are relevant because they show that the Jetta's performance isn't any better then the Prius. American automakers could careless about Hybrids… not because they don't know how to make them, because most Americans could gave a shit about getting 50mpg. They mostly want big SUVs and trucks and cars that have very powerful engines. The Prius has been around for 12 years.

I was never trying to get you to change your mind about the Jetta. I was just trying to get you to see that Hybrids are just as good on gas as diesels. You guys see this as a competition of who can get the most mpg. I saw a video where the Jetta & Prius drove to see which could get further on a tank of fuel. Prius ran out at 579 miles, while the jetta ran out at 733. Jetta people in the video were like we won!! So go ahead and enjoy your Jetta, because I could really careless about what you buy.

For some strange reason, and I can't seem to finger out why… The VW people who made the video forgot to mention that the Prius has a much smaller tank. In fact its almost half the size of a Jetta's. Oh, I know why they hid that fact! It takes only 8 gallons to fill the Prius and cost $16 ($2.00per gallon). While it takes 14.5 gallons to fill the Jetta and cost $41 ($2.85 per gallon). They paid more then twice as much in diesel just to go only 154 miles further. They both use very little fuel!!

I've owned my 09 Jetta TDI for a few weeks now, and would like to offer impressions of it to those visiting this review thinking of buying. As I said earlier, the TDI is a smooth, quiet car with better than avg road manners. I have been commuting 76 mile RT (mostly hwy) and have approx 2400 mi on the car. I have been averaging 41.8 mpg combined on 4 tanks of fuel, 70 mph max. Manual trans. Found fuel in Santa Clara, CA for 10 cents less than regular gas at the Lafeyeete Rotten Robbie.

For those of you looking to buy a VW, I think you need to check out JDPower. They rate every car and car maker on short and long term dependability. The VW is one of the worse automakers on the list! Only Sizuki is worse than VW as for as dependability. Lexus and Toyota dominate the majority of the segment awards, with Toyota receiving five awards-Highlander, Prius, Sequoia, Solara and Tundra-and Lexus receiving four-ES 330 (in a tie with the Acura RL), LS 430, and SC 430.
Its you money!

toyota also manufactures boring appliances. cars are also built substantially cheaper than a vw. So what if a cheap Casio watch is more reliable than a Rolex. One's a freaking Rolex, the other one's a children's toy. same thing here.

Buy your watch that breaks so you can feel cool, while the smart people buy the watch that works. I'm not surprised that u love VW and u should, a homer always loves his team no matter how bad they might be. Its just like when you get married, you will love him/her for the good and the bad, no one can ever tell u differently. I am speaking to the people who haven't gotten married yet, and telling them that girl (VW) is bad. She (VW) may look good and be good in bed but she isn't going to last!

Their soon will be a big waiting line for this car as Diesel fuel is now cheaper than gasoline. Diesel engines last a lot longer too and you do not have expensive batteries to replace as in a hybrid. Listen to the sweet sound of this diesel and drive this car and you will never believe you only have 140 hp because of all the torque that it has. Just bought mine and paid sticker price. Had to wait for this car but it was worth the wait.

great mileage had one but vw sucks always under hood fixing something stupid. If honda releases it's diesel then it will be worth bying a diese.Honda civic would be best bang for the buck

For some reason you're an idiot the Prius holds 11.9 gal and the Jetta holds 14.5 gal.
Diesel fuel is $1.99 and Gas is $2.14.
Hybrid mileage is horrible in the winter and can diminish by almost 40%. The TDI has a top speed of 130mph and I think the Prius goes about 95mph while getting 17mpg. The TDI will still get in the high 30's at speed and even with heavy loads.

While it is a 11.9 gallon tank, you can't put more then 9.5 gallons in it. I have run it do to empty with the last bar blinking the hole day and the most it took was 9.5 gallons to fill it. On the east coast of America 87 gas is $1.89 and Diesel is $2.83. You are right you get around 45mpg in the winter while in the summer you get 55+. The Prius gos 108mph which is fast enough. Like I have said before it is my wife's car. Both Prius and Jetta are to slow for my taste but both are great on gas.

Toyota states not one Prius has required a battery replacement due to malfunction or "wearing out." Toyota further states that the (NiMH) battery packs used in all Prius models are expected to last the life of the car. Supporting this are first- and second-generation Prius taxis in Canada that have reportedly traveled more than 200,000 miles without suffering any battery problems. As for the sweet sound… Well most of the time the Prius doesn't make any sound, since the engine is usually off!

I think I may still go with an Acura TSX.
It will get about low 30mpg's at freeway speeds, and I don't have to worry about replacing a $1600 battery at 175,000 miles.

$1,6oo battery, U are confused………..
I pull a 8×5 foot utility trailer with my TDI. Biggest load so far was 2,2oo pounds of mason sand. Also hauled a 1,5oo pound Bakers Pride Pizza oven with the TDI 125 miles..
Try that with a Prius….

Yeah? How does the new TDI handle in the snow with stock tires? Does it need dedicated snow tires? Can you live with it during the winter time, or is an AWD needed?
