Dude, these people converted old cars from gas to Electricity in their garage and all on their own. They are not over paid engineers or experts in the field by any means. If car companies had been working on this like they should have, today your yadda yadda yadda concerns would mean nothing. It can be done they just don't have the will to do it. Now, right now stop supporting the liars and look at what this one guy has done on his own.

Because SUV's are like super expensive 9 years ago. Finding and old VW would be cheap, if his experiment didn't work oh well no real loss. It's pretty clear this guy is smart and already did the math. If he was a complete dumb ass like you seem to be and if this coversion did not work he would be out 50k. Or a tank? Normaly I don't call people I don't know dumb ass but you wear it pretty well.

i also have a question. In today's economy and world, the average user doesnt know how to copy a file onto a flashdrive and transfer it to a different computer. What makes you think these people have the knowledge to even comprehend the importance of today's economy and global crisis?

I would urge the sponsor of this site to monitor comments like this and remove them. The purpose of these videos is too encourage a responsible discussion of the global climate crisis and possible solutions we might employ to meet that challenge. There are plenty of other web sites where twistedds will feel at home.

I recall this was the sort of civility being shown just about the time of the fall of the Roman Empire.

The kid was a nice touch. (not). The problem is TO BIG, for any one (or 1000) people converting a car to an EV to have any effect. To make a change that great your going to have to talk the whole planet into changing overnight.

I disagree. Even a 1000 miles journey starts with a single step. Better to have half or the cars electric in 20 years than in 100. (pardon my english)

Years ago there were more electric cars then gas. It's never going to be about the planet because the damage will not occure within the lifespan of the ones calling the shots (oil companies, governments, etc.). It's sad really. But props for your car. I bet it's fun.

Interesting. Is it just me or has the wheelbase been shortened. I swear it looks short. Thanks.

just because you cannot conceive it in your mind does not mean it is not possible.
My great-grandmother told me about crossing the plains in a covered wagon and lived to ride on a jet airplane and see men walk on the moon. It can happen, and will when enough recourses are put into finding ways to make it cheap enough for the daily commuter.
it just takes time to change the general public mindset, then it will seem inevitable.

When Kennedy committed the U.S. to a manned mission to the moon the year was 1962.The main delivery system was the Redstone rocket.Search the archives not very high tech or reliable.People in N.A.S.A. thought him a bit overly optimistic. But it was done inside of 7 years. All this waa waa waa we can't do this and that just can't be done will not help the process. The people that brought out the first electric sports car are now releasing a sedan that will get 200 miles on a charge.
It can be done.

That wasn't my argument. There's too many men in charge that will fight it. As they have been doing for years. As unfortunate as it is, technology is driven my money, not discovery.

doesn't matter how many "men in charge that will fight it". Oil is a finite resource and they won't be able to manipulate the prices much longer. Electric cars become economically viable somewhere north of $6 an gallon and that will drop when the economies of scale and new energy storage (currently batteries) technologies being worked on today start hitting the market.
It will have to happen. Capitalism will make sure of it. Saving the environment is just the cherry on top.

And how many years have we been saying this? 100? (thinks back to the 1900's electrics)
I had my fun a few years back converting a Geo Metro and it was a blast. The joy of the build far outweighed any ecological benifit at least. =)

thats right.
Richards car, with its lead acid batteries, 20 mile range and 1970s suspension might seem a little impractical to replace the family car but it demonstrates what can be done today – not the electric car's ultimate form.
Someday soon, the electric car will see realistic ranges of 300 – 400 miles. That is approaching the endurance of the human bladder, at which point range will become a moot point

To my knowledge no one was calling for electric cars when gas was 50 cents a gallon. When oil was cheap and the ICE produced the most power people where happy to buy them.
What has changed is oil prices and technological advances that bring the electric motor within range of the ICE.
Capitalism is what drove development of the ICE the last 100 years and is what will drive development of its replacement in the family car going forward.

I fear bownouts at 5 pm on a hot day when people come home to juice there cars back up from the grid. And China will build the solar panels not us. Id hope to see charging times regulated to offpeak hours on high demand days to prevent brownouts and the jobs to build the solar panels to stay here.

Dear Freightline,
Your points are well taken. One way to deal with it is to take used batteries from your car (after they have given their all) and use them as a "dump charging" station (they still retain the ability to hold sufficient charge to dump their load into a new set of car batteries). The dump station could then be set to charge only at night (when electricity from the grid is chaepest anyway). That way, your car would be good to go within minutes of returning home.

Richard has a great idea of having extra batteries being at charging stations to dump their charge to the in-car batteries reducing the charge time to 7 minutes. However this adds considerable investment and I hope it doesnt come from people using gasoline. It should come from electric users since they are the ones whom are benefitting. Let the market decide, not legislation.

"Electric cars become economically viable somewhere north of $6 an gallon"
I finds that pretty entertaining, in the UK we were paying the sterling equivalent of $11 per U.S. Gallon at the start of last summer…
