Jetta Takes on Prius: Toyota Prius vs. VW Jetta TDI Diesel
MORE ON HYBRID VS. DIESEL @ INSIDELINE.COM: www.edmunds.com We were locked in mortal combat, just as adrenaline-addled Leonidas and hubris-filled Xerxes met at the Battle of Thermopylae, when a relative handful of highly specialized Spartans held off a seemingly bottomless torque-pit of Persians for seven excruciating days. Here we have the 2009 Toyota Prius gasoline-electric hybrid, embodying up-to-the-minute fuel-sipping methods and machinery intended to take us immaculately into a ...

July 2009 sales are in: 24,295 Toyota hybrids, up 19.3%; VW all sales, 20,590, up 0.7%, and 6,320 diesels and; even Ford sales are up 1.6%. Prius is in the top 10 model sales for July. The free market quietly wispered in July, "Prius," which thundered through the halls of VW. Even Ford got a taste thanks to their hybrids.

I think Honda has claimed 50mpg in Canada…so not US gallons.

I own both, so I can comment on this.
Both cars are 06's and the VW has a few thousand miles less.
Both have been really good to us. But the VW has cost us more to run. For example, we've done the brakes on the Jetta, but the Prius has yet to be even close to wearing out it's brakes.
We also get better mpg out of the Prius then the tdi. Tdi sits around 50 with a top of 53 and the Prius has hit 60 a few times, but usually gets 54mpg.

In areas of high motor vehicle traffic, such as in large cities, the amount of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere can be quite significant.
Carbon monoxide, with the chemical formula CO, is a major atmospheric pollutant in urban areas, chiefly from exhaust of internal combustion. It is a colorless, odorless and tasteless, yet highly toxic gas.

When NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react in the presence of sunlight, they form photochemical smog, a significant form of air pollution, especially in the summer. Children, people with lung diseases such as asthma, and people who work or exercise outside are susceptible to adverse effects of smog such as damage to lung tissue and reduction in lung function.

733 mile test done in conditions that most benefit the TDI by VW to discredit the Prius, revealed some interesting numbers…
CO2 Emitted:
'09 Jetta TDI: 146.37kg
'04 Prius: 137.05kg
CO Emitted:
'09 Jetta TDI: 293.2g
'04 Prius: 73.3g
NOx Emitted:
'09 Jetta TDI: 36.65g
'04 Prius: 7.33g
Who cares about air quality?

Just wait till you have to replace the battery…

Thats the funny part.
The battery is alot cheaper now, and people like yourself think they still cost a lot.
However that is no longer the fact, not to mention that most Prius' have never had to have a battery replaced.
However, wait till the new vw's need the fancy exhaust replaced.

If VW & Toyota could work together to make a TDI Diesel Hybrid car, they should be able to build an even more efficient car. Since both TDI diesel and electric motor generate more torque than a similar sized gas engine, the end product should be a blast to drive.

I find the Toyota extremely comfortable and so easy to drive around town. Being that there are tons of Prius' on the road and they sell like hotcakes, I tend to think that anyone bashing it are the minority

your Phaeton bro, is the most bigger "lemon car" of the VW story, in USA is totally unknown, in Europe VW sold a poor number of Phaeton cuz luxury is not, it's just an oversize Passat…

actually sit in a phaeton and try to say it's not luxurious. it didn't sell well because people weren't willing to pay that much for a VW, simply because of the brand name. now it's one of the best deals on the market because no one knows what they are. even jeremy clarkson raved about it in his review.

Jetta is sold in europe as well but few people buy this car because is considered an uncool car,a "grandpa's car"lol.

Actually it's more closely related to the Audi A8, do some research next time before looking like an idiot.

That's the reason why they bash it. Like the old saying goes…
Everyone hates a winner!
By the way, the Prius is killing everything in sales. Toyota has deposits for 120,000 Priuses! They are trying to make 15,000 a month. VW sold just under 4,000 Jetta TDI's last month. When you see numbers like that you understand why VW and their fans are always talking about the Prius. 1.3 million sold and rising! If they hate the Prius, then they are really going to hate the Volt!

The Phaeton was never a Lemon Car, The Phaeton was a well liked car. The problem with the Phaeton is the VW badge, No one wanted to damage their status driving in a VW. A person that knows a good deal on a car would buy the phaeton regardless of the badge.
No wonder we are in this economic mess, people over spending money on luxury items, going into debt driving a mercedes they can't afford, flash a fairy tale status that most couldn't afford.

If the Phaeton had a Audi, BMW or Mercedes badge the car would've sold well.
And personally having the pleasure to drive a Phaeton across the state, it was a very good experience. Too bad we live in a world of commercial status and not in a world of common sense smart.
